The film ‘Captain’ is a biographical sports drama. This film is based on the life of one of the best footballers of the Indian Football Team, and the Malayali footballer, V. P. Sathyan. V. P. Sathyan belonged to Kannur. He was the captain of the Indian football team from the tenure between 1991-1995. The film ‘Captain’ presents the visual narration of the life of V. P. Sathyan.
Jayasurya appears as V. P. Sathyan in the film and Anu Sithara plays the role of Anitha Sathyan, the wife of V. P. Sathyan. Both of them have rendered awesome performances in the film. Jayasurya has been superbly fabulous in the role of V. P. Sathyan. He has handled the role with extreme finesse and composure.
The film contains great acting moments and emotional scenes all through. Jayasurya’s character in the film has got lots of scope for performance. Jayasurya has done complete justice to the character of V. P. Sathyan.
However, in scenes displaying V. P. Sathyan game expertise, the shots were limited to close shots and so on. Probably, it is due to the lack of game exposure in a great actor like Jayasurya.
We all know that when sports based films are made, the greatest challenge is faced by the actors of the film who have to match up to the talent of the actual players. Be it films based on boxing, cricket or football.. The actors of sports based movies have to bring in more than mere acting in the games scenes and they have to include specific sports components in their performances in order to bring in the perfection in their roles. We can see such drawbacks in this film as well.
In spite of this, the film, on the whole, is a good entertainer. It presents lots of touching moments and emotional display to the audience. ‘Captain’ is the debut film directed by the writer and journalist, Prajesh Sen.
V. P. Sathyan was one of the most talented football players that India had ever witnessed. However, he never received the deserved honour and recognition for his game expertise all through his life. Unfortunately, this indifference and negligence clubbed with depression led to the tragic end of the great sport star. This phase of V. P. Sathyan’s life can be experienced from a very close angle in the film.
V. P. Sathyan was a player has been hailed as a tragic hero after he committed suicide in 2006. V. P. Sathyan had won several gleaming victories in football matches played in the national and international levels as well. Be it the SAF Games in 1995 or the prestigious Santosh Trophy that was brought into Kerala in 1992 after the long gap of nineteen years.. In all these victories, V. P. Sathyan was in the forefront leading the team to great successes.
V. P. Sathyan had a life span of only 41 years. He started his football career by entering into the prestigious Lucky Star Football Club in Kannur as a player in 1983. Thereafter, he entered into the professional football team. He had been the player and served as captain in the Kerala Police football team. He had served as a captain in the Mohun Bagan team as well. He was an expert player and captain of the Indian Bank football team for some time too.
It is a fact that V. P. Sathyan won many accolades for our country in his very short life span, but very sadly the country returned the favour by giving the player a very traumatic life which ended tragically.
The mega star, Mammootty, appears in a scene in the film ‘Captain’ as Mammootty himself. Other than Jayasurya and Anu Sithara, there’s a long star cast of Siddique, Renji Panicker, Saiju Kurup and so on in the film. Janardhanan appears as leader K. Karunakaran in the film, and he has done a great job in portraying the leader.
The music in the film is done by Gopi Sundar. The background music of the film stands much above the songs in the film.
Roby Varghese Raj has done the cinematography in the film. The film has an overall duration of 144 minutes.
This film can definitely be relished for its great story and situations. It can be considered as a great entertainer as well. However, viewers longing for films with mass scenes and hair rising dialogues may not enjoy the film. It would certainly be worth the money for a viewer who enjoys a great plot and emotional moments in films.
